Have you ever seen in Decathlon stores those crates where you just put the groceries and the total appears in a second, without passing the products one by one? That’s a self-RFID checkout. And if you’re trying to figure out how they work, what makes them so magical, and why they could be the future of your small or large store, you’ve come to the right place.
That’s exactly what I do: making custom-made self-RFID checkout systems, like the ones you find on the ZAutomation website. And in this article, I’ll explain, in simple terms, everything you need to know.
What are RFID self-checks?
RFID self-checkouts are self-service totems that allow customers to pay independently, without going through the traditional checkout. The huge difference from regular self-checkouts (the ones with the barcode) is that you don’t have to scan the products one by one.
Simply place the items in a special basket (or reading area) and the system, thanks to UHF RFID technology, reads all the products simultaneously, in less than a second.
The result? End of lines, zero stress and a dream customer experience.
How exactly do they work?
Simple: Each product in the store has a small RFID label (often already attached by the supplier, as in the case of Decathlon, or applicable by the store). This label contains a unique code.
When you enter the RFID self-checkout reading area:
- The system automatically detects all labels in the basket.
- The software identifies the products and shows the total on the screen.
- The customer pays by card, POS or (in some versions) even cash.
- Payment updates warehouse inventory in real time with 100% accuracy.
No one-to-one switching, no barcodes to search for, no waiting.
What are they for? The 4 advantages that change the game
- Instant transactions
The customer leaves the store in seconds. Perfect for peak traffic or for shops with lots of low-value items (clothing, sports, hardware, bookstores).
- No more warehouse discrepancies
Each sale is automatically recorded. The system knows what comes out, what remains and what is missing. End of handmade inventories and errors.
- Free staff for value services
If the checkout is automatic, your clerks don’t spend their time being “accountants”. They can advise customers, set up shop windows or manage the back office.
- Integration with any payment system
The crates I propose (for example those of Indevo on ZAutomation) integrate with your POS, management, Cashmatic totems and even weight systems (optional).
Practical examples: where they use them (and where you would use them)
- Large sports chains (like Decathlon) – to eliminate queues at quick purchases.
- Clothing stores – where each item already has an RFID label.
- Libraries and mediaworld – for products with label already applied.
- Logistics and warehouses – for the automatic counting of pallets (not only for sale to the public).
But be careful: I’m not just for the big boys. I also install RFID self-checks for small shops, optics, hardware stores, or pharmacies looking to make a quantum leap.
But do they really work with all products?
Yes, as long as the products have a UHF RFID label. For unlabeled objects (e.g., fruit by weight), a scale can be integrated or a manual scanning area can be provided. The most advanced systems (such as those found in the link) also handle shielding from metals and liquids – classical radio frequency problems.
How much does it cost and is it worth it?
Costs depend on:
- Number of crates
- Screen size (22 or 27 inches)
- Cash Form Yes/No
- Customizations (wood/ABS design, load cells, software integration)
Good news: these systems fall under Industry 4.0 incentives (up to 40% tax credit). So the investment pays off quickly, especially if you have a medium-high flow of customers.
