Intro: The Challenge of Multidisciplinarity
Designing a spray drying plant for the pharmaceutical sector means bringing together a wide range of skills: thermo-fluid dynamics, precision mechanics, electrical engineering and GMP-compliant control software. The challenge for the design company is often to coordinate these specialities harmoniously, ensuring that the automation part is not an ‘accessory’ but the nervous system that makes the entire process reliable and traceable.
The Project: Multi-level Technical Support
We were involved as specialised technical consultants to support the team of a process plant design company in the development phase of a new line. Our task: to be the sole point of reference for everything related to control, supervision and their integration with the electrical and mechanical parts.
Our Support in Accompanying You:
- PLC and Control Logic Consulting: We supported the team in defining the software architecture, jointly developing the critical control logic for managing temperatures, flows and pressures, ensuring stability and repeatability.
- HMI/SCADA Development Support: We developed the interface design, suggesting best practices for batch traceability (FDA 21 CFR Part 11) and jointly implementing data logging and predictive alarm functions.
- Consulenza Elettrica e Meccatronica: Il nostro supporto è stato trasversale:
- Electrical: Review of electrical diagrams for switchboards and suggestions for the optimal integration of sensors and actuators with the PLC.
- Mechanics: Constant dialogue with mechanical designers to optimise the choice and positioning of actuators (valves, inverters) and sensors, ensuring that the dynamic response of the mechanical system was in line with the control capabilities.
The Results of the Collaboration:
The client benefited from an extended and cohesive team:
- Reduction of design risks: Interface problems between mechanical, electrical and software components were identified and resolved during the design phase, rather than after the machine had been assembled.
- Performance Optimisation: The control system was tailored to the actual dynamic characteristics of the machine, thanks to direct dialogue between our automation experts and their mechanical designers.
- Indirect Internal Training: Their team enhanced their advanced automation skills by working alongside us.
- More Robust and Integrated Finished Product: The final system featured superior integration, becoming a strong selling point.
